About

The Middler is thrilled to announce Nieves Bookstore, the inaugural exhibition of its 2018 program. The exhibition opens on the evening of Thursday February 8th and will be open by appointment through March 4th, 2018.

Nieves Bookstore will transpose the publisher’s store in Zurich to The Middler (an apartment gallery in Brooklyn, New York) and will present a selection of Nieves titles alongside two new Nieves publications made available for the first time: Toilet Paintings by Quintessa Matranga and Exploding Jezebel by Rafael Delacruz.

Exploding Jezebel reproduces a selection of new paintings by Delacruz. Drawn from the artist's "Tech Bum" series, (which envisions a future portrait of his native Bay Area), and also from the artist's personal imagery, Exploding Jezebel untwists a narrative universe of misfit characters in Paul Klee-like palettes and visionary hues.

Quintessa Matrangra views the subject of her toilet paintings in two ways: first, as a symbol of contemplation or critique, and second, as an extension of the human anatomy. In her words, "The toilet functions as an inbetween place – between our human selves and our houses, or our built surroundings. It's something of a portal where our body blends into the world." Toilet Paintings collects Matrangra's celebrated series, (first exhibited at Freddy in Harris, New York, in May 2017), in the debut publication of her paintings.

The Middler would like to thank Nieves for their involvement and Vitsoe who kindly provided furniture.

Nieves is a Swiss-based publisher of artists’ books and zines co-founded by Benjamin Sommerhalder (b. 1977). Both titles will be available at the show.

Quintessa Matranga was born in New York in 1989. Recent shows include Carlos / Ishikawa (London), Karma International (Los Angeles), and Queer Thoughts (New York). She lives and works in New York.
